Who were the Mississippi College Rifles?
In April 1861, a group of Clintonians formed a military group called the Mississippi College Rifles. This unit fought in major Civil War battles in Northern Virginia and Pennsylvania. The company initially consisted of sixty-five members, including thirty-two students, three faculty members, and one trustee who served as the commander. The unit was said to have expanded to 104 individuals, and it is reported that only eight returned from the war. A stone monument on campus exists to commemorate the Mississippi College Rifles.
