Footnotes only serve one purpose, to allow the reader to access with ease and confidence the source that you have used. Typically, the discipline in which you are working (history, sociology, English, biology, etc.) will determine which citation style to use in your papers. However, when writing a paper for class, make sure to check which style your instructor prefers. Footnotes have a different format than entries in a Works Cited/References/Bibliography page.
The difference between footnotes and endnotes is that footnotes appear at the bottom of the page and endnotes appear at the end of the article, essay, or paper. They are not used only for legal essays.
